Art for Spastics v. 135 (Slight Return)

I know! I know! I practically promised to return this week, but I was late for the show because I was swamped at the saltmine (big deadline day). BUT! My girlfriend DJ Fuzzbox Flynn filled in capably and picked all but two songs, and I join her for color commentary in the second hour. I'm still carrying around all the new music I've been collecting for the past month, and I'm ready to unload it on you in next week's AFS v. 136, but nonetheless, I endorse these two hours as perfectly great audio Calgon to take you away from your office doldrums, or unemployment doldrums...

Since it was my girlfriend who picked almost all of these songs, and because I'm still buried below bushels of busywork from the frenzied legislative activity at adjournment deadlines (I'll save you from too much more shoptalk!), I don't have a lot to say about a whole lotta the music you will hear on this weeks AFS podcast...except to say that it rules! AND, it totally hella-rules that I have a girlfriend who's happy to receive gifts such as a boxed set of Faust CDs. She doesn't even like jewelry. Man, am I lucky? Flynn begins with one of her Faust faves that she never played on the radio before. After an unseasonably hot month of May here in the Sacto Valley, we could only wish for a "Rainy Day," and apparently the vibe was strong enough for cool winds to come rushing as clouds formed. Traces of rain were reported at several locations within the broadcast range of Freeform KDVS. So, I'd say she's off to an impressive beginning!

I know that Faust was one of the most outspoken German bands to protest the usage of the term Krautrock, but since the word became a genre descriptive, Faust was certainly pegged by rock historians as one of the three most canonized Krautrock bands. One of the really rad things about Krautrock bands is their idealized vision of music being free, and not only from constraints such as the three-minute pop songform or strict adherence to the Western tonal hierarchy, but free of any cost. In today's day and age of 7" records with a wholesale cost of $3-plus (I remember people threatening to boycott Amoeba ten years ago when new 7" records hit $3.98 for most) and $300 weekend passes to Coachella and bands selling their lanyards for $1000 a pop at South by Southwest, it's hard to envision an entire scene of great music which happened at free all-day music festivals where bands often gave their records away to fans. When Virgin Records signed Faust, the band held enough chips in the bargain to set a 49p retail price for their LP, which at the time should have sold for about 3.00 £. Ex-record store clerk Jim Kerr, then an obnoxious punk rocker in Johnny & the Self Abusers, has bragged that he and his mates took a quantity of 49p Faust LPs to the store's rooftop and chucked them like frisbees only to watch them shatter below. If the records were so cheap, they mustn't have been very good, right? Jim had such a deficit of good taste that he later sang for the third-tier U2 wannabes known as Simple Minds. Now, mint originals of that Faust LP are museum pieces credited for their influence on a wide range of music, and Simple Minds clog up the used bins.

I've written plenty about the Bad Trips and the greatness of Grady Runyan (ex-Monoshock/Liquorball) in previous AFS posts, and you can use the search function.

Although I'm unsure of their current status as a band, I sure hope that we haven't heard the last of The Zebra Attack, a group of grizzled indie-rock dads from the Santa Cruz area who conjured up the ghosts of pre-homogenization-era indie rock of the late-80s and early-90's before Touch & Go, Merge, and Matador became bankable brands passing off mostly college-schlock in a 5:1 shit-to-hit ratio. In those days, indie rock spoke more of the mode of production and delivery to market rather than a certain guitar sound or lyrics about frogs on a log or broken toasters or holding hands. There was music that wasn't aggressive enough to be punk, but it wasn't totally balls-less and bland. It could even be weird, pack a supreme punch, and sometimes even be surprisingly heavy. You had your Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 making great records, your World of Pooh, ST 37, F/i and Vocokesh...not to mention The Clean and early Polvo stuff. The Zebra Attack bring to mind that era on their two LPs which they released on their own Soundexploder label a few years back. This band played it slow and deliberate and incredibly loud, but that's not to say they were going for Black Sabbath. A pure heart of a pop song is at the core of all of their music. Anyone know what became of these guys? All I know is that they hardly ever played live, but Davis was treated to them twice: once at a fabled Crunk House show with pirated electricity from the vacationing neighbors' house (the lights slightly browned everytime the band riffed together), and the other time at Operation: Restore Maximum Freedom...I think it was the second one. They were really tremendous. Someone, tell me they're working on a third record, please!

Next up, a few from the Siltbreeze stables, and they're all from album-of-the-year nominees...one beautifully filthy slumtrip through pain and agony with Pink Reason and then the prettiest song off the new LP by one of the weirdest group of hippies you'll ever hear, Ex-Cocaine from Missoula, Montana. These albums are both so superb that you should waste no time in getting your mitts all over them, but I plan to tell you a lot more about them in coming weeks when I have a lot more time. Pink Reason is coming to the West Coast in July with fellow Wisconsinites Hue Blanc's Joyless Ones, and I'm very excited about it. I need to start researching the availability of fresh cheese curds within close range of the tour itinerary so we can knock that dairy supremacy chip off their shoulders. And Ex-Cocaine...I love the new album, but until I can show you their different dimensions, it won't possibly make sense when I begin to tell you how awesome it is.

I met someone the other day who coiled back when I mentioned Times New Viking and asked, "Isn't that band kinda hyped?" Uh, wow...Is it too late for some people already? If your radar was too fuzzy that you never heard them before your foolish hype boycott, you need to reset your radar. This band gets a lot of pub all over the internet, but it's well-deserved on account of their unusual combination of punk rawness, crucial anthemics, and sweet melodies. That pre-homogenization era or indie rock that I mentioned a couple paragraphs back...Yeah, it's like this band came out of a time capsule of that era, too, only this one's about to turn your party loose into a full-bore fist-pumpin' singalong. I'm very pleased to be helping bring Times New Viking to the West Coast in August with another strong personal favorite of mine, Little Claw. Watch here for more dates, as we expect to have them all wrapped up within the next two weeks, but these are the ones on lock right now...

Their new LP, Origin & Tectonics, sounds great, and it is about a week away from being out. It's a self-released 180-gram LP with a CD inside with the same program. It shows a lot of their different sides...the rockers, the folkers, the party animals, the clever guitar heroes.Matt St. Germain promised a coupla years ago that we were gonna learn that Elvis de Morrow would be "the next big thing in guitar-playing" (yes, those were his exact words which I cut & pasted), and this is the album that really begins to tell that story. It's not the blown-out barrage of noise that we heard on Hunting Season. This one's got some reserved moments and some beauty on it, but it's still brimming with indomitable spirit, which is what I really love about these guys as musicians and as people, too.

I'll end for now with a little bit of news from the Dead Moon camp...

So many people were saddened and confused by the seemingly abrupt end to Dead Moon following their last European tour. And perhaps it only adds to the confusion, but I'm sure a lot of you will be happy to know that Fred and Toody Cole are back making music again in their new band called the Pierced Arrows, and early reports of their first show say that they sound a lot like Dead Moon. Their drummer is reportedly Kelly from Resist, Masskontroll, Detestation, and a host of crusty bands from the 90's. Andrew Loomis is also back in the saddle for The Shiny Things, I've heard. So, that's something to be hopeful for. As soon as either band plans to hit the road down I-5, I will try to help bring them here!

Enjoy listening!

Art for Spastics v. 134

Sorry for the delay in informing readers of this blog, but I did not post AFS v. 134 because the KDVS archive was down for the week. It was good timing actually, because I was not up to par this week due to a concussion I suffered the night before the radio show. I was exhausted despite playing mostly longish freakouts and drones, and a caller to the request line suggested that I sounded as if I'd had a stroke. Jeez! But I'm alright now.

Also, AFS v. 135 is not happening this week either because I will be in charge of the show happening Monday, May 28 at Fools Foundation featuring The Intelligence, the English Singles, and the Standard Tribesman. DJ Wülf Collapse will be filling in very capably with two hours of loudness and intensity that you might really enjoy. AFS v. 135 will happen the following week instead. I will have saved up a ton of new records, tapes, and other primo crud that I just bought, so it'll be all new!

Thanks!

Cheveu & Tyvek live on KDVS

Cheveu and Tyvek played live on Freeform KDVS 90.3 FM in Davis last night during the "Bear Is Driving Car" program, and when you listen, I think you'll agree that it sounded great, and both bands put in a great performance.

To download the program, CLICK HERE (link is good for approx. 70 days).

To stream it, CLICK HERE before May 17, 2007.

And don't forget to see these bands on the "Franco-American Friendship Tour" on the west coast (now in progress).

Cheveu begins approximately 10 minutes into the program and played for nearly 30 minutes. Tyvek begins about 1:10:00 into the program and also played for about 30 minutes.

Thanks to DJ Mucky for giving up half his radio show for these bands to perform; thanks to Andy Pastalaniec for engineering (and pretty much nailing) the live sound; and thanks to Grace Voong for lending her bass amp to Tyvek!

I got a feature article published in Sacto's Midtown/Downtown Monthly about Sacramento serving as a sort of vortex for the best in French garage/artpunk. The story was edited down very thoughtfully, which I was quite happy with, but if you'd like to read the whole thing, here you go...

Cheveu: photo lavo, recyclart, bruxelles, 23/02/07

When Zima first hit store shelves in Sacramento and Davis two years early in 1992, it had become clear to me that the Sacramento area is frequently singled out as a test market for new products before nationwide introduction. According to New Products Management for the 1980s by Allen Booz, the reason for Sacramento's selection as a test market is that the consumers in the region are not regarded as future fadstarters or early adopters. The eastern counterpart test market was Syracuse, New York...hardly near the leading edge either. New products that test well in such markets are forecast to perform well elsewhere. If it can make it here, it must be able to make it anywhere.

But when it comes to new garagepunk and wonderfully weird artpunk from France, no one can mistake Sacramentans as late adopters with vanilla taste. To be sure, for the last couple of years, some of the most unique French undergound rock music has begun to find its way into the consciousness of American record collectors, bloggers, and critics via three discerning Sacramento-based DIY record labels: Ss recordS, Plastic Idol, and Weird Forest.

Finally, for the first time in three years since before this unusual trend began, one of these French bands is coming to the West Coast in May for a tour which will touch down twice in the area: in Sacramento at Fools Foundation on May 8 and on May 19 at the DAM House in Davis. The band is Cheveu, an outstanding raw electro/weirdpunk trio from Paris whose first 7-inch and vinyl LP appearance were released last year on Ss, the one-man operation based in a tiny nook of an office adjacent to the stockroom behind Time Tested Books. Cheveu's summer 2006 tour of the South, Midwest, and the Eastern U.S. and Canada succeeded on the strength of their Ss offerings and the enthusiastically positive blogstorm and indie press that they provoked nationwide, which was also buoyed by airplay at freeform KDVS in Davis and the highly influential WFMU in New Jersey.

Cheveu--that's "hair" en Français--are a band inspired by such diverse influences that they create a wholly other brand of music which is extremely difficult to classify, but has very wide appeal. The guitar is soaked in the raunch of garagepunk and occasionally dabbles in surf. Low-tech keyboards and drum machine recall the darkwave and electro sounds from the early 1980's. On their faster songs, the propulsive beats have the ornate snareshot patterns and hip hop-sourced double triplets of the drum 'n' bass/jungle arm of techno. The vocals trespass through African-American talk-blues and toasting traditions before hastening up to a nervous speed-rap in a husky and unmistakably French accent. Perhaps the most contemporary element employed by Cheveu is the vocal effects processing that is used famously by modern psychedelic groups such as Animal Collective and Gang Gang Dance; whereas these bands use vocal effects for enchanting and entrancing the listener with diffuse abstractions, Cheveu often use the Boss Line 6 pedal to push excitement into mania, much like the progressive trance genre of electronic music when its pioneers first turned melodies into unstable isotopes in liquid form. The fidelity, and attitude of Cheveu is still caked in scuzz and oozing sleaze, and so their fanbase to date has centered in certain circles of music that is still called punk rock, but the flavors of electronic music are still distinct.

"Euro rock & roll bands are much more likely to experiment with electronics than U.S. bands," explains Ss boss Scott Soriano. "Since at least Kraftwerk, electronics have played a part in Euro rock & roll, especially electro-punk. There also was a very big minimal synth scene in Europe in the late 70s and early 80s. And electro was much more of a mainstream music there in the 90s. All of that informs today's French punk or at least experimental punk bands, and plenty others throughout Europe."

While Krautrock bands from Germany, especially Neu!, Kraftwerk, and Tangerine Dream, are most often cited by rock historians as the leading edge of rock bands that incorporated synthesizers and other electronic devices into rock in the early 1970s, the pioneering efforts of French artists certainly reinforces Soriano's explanation for Cheveu's brave approach. Those efforts date back to the dawn of musique concrète in the 1950s and carry forward through the modular synth compositions of Eliane Radigue and the "space-age pop" of Jean Jacques Perrey in the 60s, and into 70's with the expansive prog of Magma and Heldon, and arguably the world's first synthpunk band, Metal Urbain, whom many critics and music-bloggers consider to be one of the most primary and singular influences on the new scene of French artpunk.

Soriano's releases of French bands on Ss began in 2004 with the Heavy Listening LP by Crash Normal, a Paris band he also chose to include on the full-length Babyhead album alongside Sacto locals such as Antennas Erupt, Klondike & York, and Sexy Prison. Blutt, a more traditional garagepunk band from France also appeared on the stylistically varied yet cogent compilation. Crash Normal's first splash on Ss vinyl was the culmination of excitement that first sparked locally when Soriano received copies of their second EP in exchange for copies of earlier releases on his Sacto/Loft-centered Moo-La-La imprint which predated Ss. An unseemly yet appealing amalgam or incendiary garagepunk and the most enduring elements of the then-expiring "digital hardcore" fad, The Nothing I Can Tell EP by Crash Normal was unlike anything Soriano had heard, and his enthusiasm for the record spread quickly through the shoppers of the carefully chosen stock of records for sale behind the counter at Time Tested's original location, and especially through many of his DJ colleagues at KDVS 90.3 FM in Davis thanks to the extra copy that he donated to the station's library.

Until Crash Normal began to infect Sacramento and Davis record collectors, the most visible French contemporary punk in America were by the No-Talents and Splash Four, whose records were brought stateside by the now-defunct Broken Rekids label from San Francisco. The tie binding those two bands was guitarist/singer Lili Zeller, whose husband and Splash Four bandmate and partner in her current duo Volt is Jacques Amsellem, the record trader who brought Crash Normal to Soriano's attention. After Heavy Listening and Babyhead, the next Ss release of French music was Lili Z's Leatherlution EP, a small slab of relentless, sultry synthpunk dancefloor oppression that became an instant KDVS classic. Meanwhile, Amsellem suggested that Soriano release an all-French follow-up to Babyhead, and in 2006 Ss recordS released the Tête de Bébé LP, featuring eleven French bands and one Walloon artist from Belgium. Tête was an instant success with garage/artpunk fans in the USA and France, where Soriano was an honored guest DJ at the Paris release party.

"I cherry-picked bands for Tête, so it really doesnt represent French bands as a whole," Soriano said. "It is just one small sliver of a scene. All of the bands on that comp knew each other, have played with each other, and even shared band members before that record was assembled. All in all, we are talking about maybe 25 people, three of whom are siblings. Go beyond that 25 and there are other microscenes in Paris and other French towns. Some of the music is similar; some is different."

With the nearly simultaneous release of Tête, Cheveu's debut Dog EP, and the second EP of Frustration from Paris, Ss became known in France as the foreign independent record label that is uniquely tapped into the French underground, making it known and available throughout North America and beyond. Other labels' titles on the ever-changing Ss distribution catalog have included many more French records since then, and most limited quantities of these are sold out almost immediately or in less than 48 hours. "The orders come from all over the world," Soriano said.

Although it is unfair to many other Ss releases, French artpunk affinity also became the identity of Ss here, replacing its former identity as the homebase for the music of the A Frames from Seattle just as that band made the jump to Sub Pop Records for the release of their third album.

"As for the France/Sacramento/Seattle axis, it works on both ends," said Jacques Amsellem. "Both A Frames I (technically self-titled) and II LPs (the best-sellers of the Ss catalog) are reissued these days on vinyl in France (on Born Bad Records). Lars Finberg (of the A Frames and the Intelligence) is a hero everywhere in France, you know."

While the uniqueness of Cheveu's music is immediately apparent, the sound of other French bands featured on Tête and other Ss releases has also struck many North American fans as an original group of adjacent styles which some have begun to regard as a trend that is endemic to France: atavistic synthpunk, clever guitar angularisms, a sense of humor that seems French if only to Americans, juxtaposition of raw punk sounds and electronic music.

"What you're talking about is just people trying to do it a bit differently," explained Amsellem. "Also younger open-minded people coming in and doing it their own way and refreshing it all. Some bands, labels, openminded stores, [and] go-betweens filtering it a bit and helping...spreading it out in their own directions like in every mutual appreciation network."

Another important part of that network in Sacramento is Mario Solis, a state employee by day who has run his own Plastic Idol Records since early 2004, when he began with the Hootenanny 7-inch EP by the local band Duchess of Saigon. Last year, Plastic Idol unleashed the first American vinyl release of the Anteenagers M.C., Let's Not Have a Party. The band includes drummer Laurent Bigot, formerly of the No-Talents, whose friendship with another Sacramento music figure, Dylan Rogers, singer of Sonic Love Affair, led to a memorable Anteenagers live performance at Old Ironsides in 2004. The Anteenagers' brief U.S. tour in 2004 only included four other cities: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York. Sacramento stuck out on that list, but Rogers and Bigot's ties reach back to the 1990's when the two were briefly in a band together. Both the LP and EP of the Anteenagers M.C. sold out in Sacramento that night, leaving none for the Chicago and New York shows. Their memorable performance is still talked about today, and certainly the excitement built by that chatter in Sacramento helped influence the release of Let's Not Have a Party. A second Anteenagers EP is scheduled for Plastic Idol in 2007, and recently, Solis has issued the debut EP of The Remenbers [sic] from Marseille.

"I'm pleased that folks are warming up nicely to the Remenbers record," Solis reported. "They're a newer band and not necessarily part of the inner circle, [which is] almost Sacramento-like in nature, especially in terms of band membership; a strong case could also be made that Seb Normal (formerly of Crash Normal and currently in several stellar bands) is the Chris Woodhouse of Paris for his recording work of the French rock 'n' roll underground."

The Remenbers are an excellent but more traditional garagepunk band that stands out for their extremely blown-out recording fidelity and savage bludgeon.

"When I hear the Remenbers sing in accented English, it makes me smile," Solis chuckled. "Is it because it's an absurd line? The phrasing? Probably a bit of both. There's also a swagger in the Remenbers' music, a brashness, that I find incredibly appealing. I hear it in the Anteenagers M.C.'s music too. To these ears, it's the mark of a good band and not something that is unique to any given country, and it's something for which I listen when considering music to release on Plastic Idol."

In 2006, Sacramento-based Weird Forest Records released an LP by a French metal band called Eikenskaden which was also very unique as it is baroque-influenced black metal, a style that the band has proclaimed as "French Touch Black Metal."

The incredible fun of a groundbreaking band called Cheveu and an unprecedented mass-marketed clearmalt beverage in Zima: Neither were born here, but Sacramento has approved both of these for the entire world.

Cheveu & Tyvek's "Franco-American Friendship Tour" Starts Today in L.A.!

Cheveu--that's "hair" en Français--are a Paris band inspired by such diverse influences that they create a wholly other brand of music which is extremely difficult to classify, but has very wide appeal. The fidelity, and attitude of Cheveu is still caked in scuzz and oozing sleaze, and so their fanbase to date has centered in certain circles of music that is still called punk rock, but the flavors of electronic music and even French pop music are still distinct.

Tyvek are an absolutely endearing happy, scrappy funtime band whose debut 7" last year flipped minds with its authentic flavor of Messthetics-era British DIY circa 1978-1980 so much that it was such a surprise to learn that they are actually from today, and with songs begging to know "Can you drive a Honda like a can drive Honda (4x)?" and dissing on the Ford Escort, it was also surprising to learn that they are from Detroit. This is primo snappy upbeat punk with a jangle-pop heart.

Meet the Bands of "Newbie Friendly"

Since some of you have emailed to complain that you can't find the comp (sorry, I shoulda explained better before); others say they wanna know more about who these bands are; here's the deal...

Say I care too much, but we really put a lot of ourselves into Freeform KDVS, the fulltime FM and online radio station that exists for and because of its listeners, who are very often the same-level priorities-backward music-freaks as you and you, and other people here at TB. Punk- and thug-run since 1963, we are probably the best terrestrial-based online listening destination for fans of the new music of extremely wide variety and deep obscurity. Not meaning to brag, but that's the way that it is.

As incentive for you to support us, we give you thank-you gifts or premiums that are worth the money you pledge. As extra incentive for fans of the "weirdpunk," I made this "Newbie Friendly" 78-minute, 24-track CDR compilation of mostly new and some old songs that are either exclusive or exceedingly rare, and that you might not otherwise hear any other way. "Newbie Friendly" is free on top of any other premiums you select.

To view this gift, go to...
http://kdvs.ucdavis.edu/viewother.cfm
...then select "Freebies"...and you'll see it there.

To donate to KDVS online, and select "Newbie Friendly", go to...
http://kdvs.ucdavis.edu/secure/pledgeform.cfm
...fill out form, pledge $25 or more, choose this freebie, and then choose any other valuable dollar-for-dollar premium you like otherwise.

You can also call the fundraiser hotline toll-free: (877) 399-KDVS
or (530) 754-KDVS

THIS WILL BE AVAILABLE THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT, April 22. (For $100, you can get 14 CDR comps handmade by DJs including many of our very best...It's worth it!)

(1) Der Submarine Racers "Cheap Date": Here's a made-to-order blast of blown-out sleaze that's exclusive to this collection. With their prospective label vetoing my proposal to include the outrageous "Space Burrito," the MySpace budget-rock rager of the year, I asked the band to provide me with any music that's not already slated for release on upcoming 7" vinyl. There was no such material, so the band offered to write and record a wholly new song. With gratitude, I replied that my timeline didn't allow for that, so they went right to work and emailed me this .wav file a day later!

(2) Wax Museums "Worm": These young and slovenly slobberers from Denton, Texas, play a preciously authentic brand of Angry Samoans and "Killed by Death" obsession as heard on their two 7-inchers so far. "Worm" is from the B-side of their 2006 debut EP, and this one will burrow its way into your brain like a devious little annelid.

(3) Doppelganger Squid "At War": In 1994, this North Carolina band made one delightfully scuzzy 7" on the obscure Waggletone label. All three songs are clever and great as examples of ultra-budget lo-fi weirdpunk that is made to sound good. Are my ears bad, or does these drums sound like early Chrome? A $200 pawn shop special, played in a style that is skeletal, yet nervously shuffling. Guitars are positively Tapewormian at times! Perhaps these guys were like a more metaphysically minded Sockeye or slightly psych-inflected Kill the Hippies.

(4) Toxic Attitude "War Crimes": I found this seven-song 7" record in a small quantity at Amoeba Records ten years ago, and I was immediately curious because of the campy hand-drawn cover of a mullet-dude guzzling a beer and the monkeylike print of the EP's title, "Stupid Teenage Music." The back cover had a xerox-degraded photo of the band with two of the members in their graduation dress, posing against the fence of the high school baseball field. The "fuck you" list included Violent Apathy and CH. 3. I just knew it had to be good, so I bought them all. What I found in the grooves was better than I expected...total last-brain-cell devastating puerile HC played at the edge of no control, but with a complete disregard for self-consciousness about zero musical talent and not-even-half-baked political rants. The best part is the ridiculous reverb drench effect that the singer uses to drive home certain choice lyrical passages. I'm guessing he controlled it with a foot-switch. When you hear this, you're gonna wonder why this hasn't already been made legendary on many mp3 blogs.

(5) Red Asphalt "Red Asphalt": Here's some highly dynamic synthpunk from a 1979 7" from a mysterious Bay Area band who also appeared on the "Live at Le Disque" 2xLP compilation. I know little else about them, but this sure sounds like the kinda proto-art/tweener-garagepunk that inspires such bands as Functional Blackouts, certain Jay Reatard vehicles, and the A Frames family tree.

(6) Talbot Tagora "Bent Boy Out": Here's the most promising sounds of young DIY Seattle featuring youngbloods who cut their teeth in bands like Mikaela's Fiend and Last Slice of Butter. The kinetic galloping pace and guitar angles of Abe Vigoda are evident here, but so are the raw mp3-maché and hooky melodics of the Intelligence, and while other songs from their self-produced "Volcano Girls" CDR album rock harder than this, "Bent Boy Out" sounds like it also delves into the best bands of the C-86 progeny.

(7) Skarekrau Radio "Kitty Swap": With their cult religion and mythology, SKR are at once kinda offputting freakishness and enrapturing, and sometimes even a great party band, such as on this song from last year's split LP with Jerusalem & the Starbaskets on Apop Records. If you'll pardon more of my lazy this-band-meets-that-band comparos, lemme just say that the obvious equation I hear is Bunny Brains plus Smegma.

(8) ...Worms "Woodfire (Autobahn)": The ellipsis is indeed part of the name of this Portland-via-Pullman quartet of self-described "ADD-riddled grizzled old men" (they're about the same age as me, I'm pretty sure). This song is from their four-song 7" that came out on Marriage Records a couple years back. Crispy Ambulance had a lyric that went "Caught halfway between the unsightly and serene" which sounded like so much proto-goth bullshit, but maybe they were foresaging this oddly compelling band. This one writhes (bass), rants (vocals), pummels (drums), and serenades (guitar) all at the same time, but all so effectively.

(9) Hiroshima Rocks Around "Closed Mouth": From Italy, HRA step on touchstones of AmRep-era pigfuck, hardcore, weirdpunk, and even skirt around jazz sometimes, and bring it all together in their own unique style. The flavor of AmRep is strongest on this particularly stout pounder which rides its insistent riff and deliberative rhythm like a tectonic plate into a subduction zone, and it creates just as much heat.

(10) KK Rampage "The Devil Is Here": What started as a decade-late-for-"Now-Wave" Chicago antics-rock with 20 unfinished tracks qualifying as an official CDR album improved in 2006 to become the most-improved band of the year. Yet somehow I knew from that first CDR I heard that I needed to pay attention and compartmentalize--if not toally shut out--all the haters in message board flamewars accusing these guys of registering fake profile to pose as ultra-fans. I fully believe these complainers were just upset over the band soaking the audience and throwing flour on them at a show during their formative days of antics being way ahead of song ideas. I asked them for permission to cull my favorite from their first fully awesome CDR-EP, but they insisted on sending a brand-new exclusive. It's a good one with a plodding powerful yet sexy rhythm and guitars skronking sideways, and for antics' sake, schitzo vocals swing from helium-rich to histrionic cro-mag.

(11) AIDS Wolf "Bethlehem Embargo Crystal": Montreal MySpace monsters turn out extreme-smack-talking haters and gushing lovers aplenty, and I'm totally on the posi side as this band and my radio show have a mutual love thang. I was hooked from the first listen because the music sounded like so much fun, and completely soaked in sweat. But just when the haters thought they had 'em pegged, the band added new dimensions, growing more psychedelic and rhythmically and stylistically adventurous...sometimes even settling the chaos to dwell in some lushness, as you can hear on this exclusive offering.

(12) Arthrose Aujourd'hui "Slept in Again": Vancouver's chapter of French weirdpunk's Oreille Equitable "Triple Alliance" (including Cheveu, Crack und Ultra Eczema, A.H. Kraken, and others) translates to "Arthritis Today." When the band's psych anesthesia attack locks you into stupefied traction, you may become so crippled as to not even twitch a joint. But lock away the Icy Hot and enjoy the ride. The band is two members of Ladies Night plus a French guy who's soon to return to home. I vote for arthritis today, and for at least a few more prolific months. Do you know that sleazy feeling of waking up past noon for days and days and days, even as you try to break the habit? This song captures that perfectly.

(13) Factums "Split Screen": This Seattle band are a cousin branch on the A Frames family tree with membership directly descending from the Intelligence and Popular Shapes. Their sound is not too unlike a cross between the droll DIY transistor artpunk of Boredom & Terror by the Intelligence and early Bruce Haack proto-electronica, perhaps also spiked with the more experimental edge of the British DIY music of the late 70's and early 80's featured on the Messthetics series. A release on Siltbreeze is slated for later. Dig the raddest, iciest keyboard riff since Head & the Hares covered "Lost."

(14) M.A.L. "Seven Minutes to Midnight": Michael A. Lucas--yes, that Mike Lucas--made a couple albums in the early 80's released under his initials of dark, brooding experimental rock that's something like Factrix with a 60's psych fascination, especially on 1981's Compendium Maleficarum LP, the album which includes this ultra-creepy song about incest sung from the point of view of a perverse father.

(15) Little Claw "Wayward Chief": Probably my favorite new discovery of the last year or so, this Detroit band almost slipped past my radar long enough to sneak their first LP past me, but fortunately I got a hold of the songs due to appear on their second LP, which will be out soon on Ecstatic Peace, and now I just want everyone to be ready for their onslaught of caveman pounding, scrawling psychpunk guitars, and the stunning performance of a female singer with delicate yin and ferocious yang in her voice, and her guitar playing. And sometimes it's all yang and no yin, and that's when Little Claw has the power to crush you.

(16) Drivetrain "Time Is of the Essence": If this sounds even slightly like Dead Moon to you, then you won't be surprised to learn that (a) this guitarist/singer and bassist/singer are a husband/wife tandem, (b) the drummer Louis Sambora was earlier the drummer of Fred and Toody Cole's pre-Dead Moon band, The Rats, (c) according to the record sleeve, when the van needs repairs, the old man would rather fix it himself than hire a mechanic, and (d) the record was released in 1988 on the Coles' own Tombstone Records. And, of course, this song is a great example of simple, honest rock 'n' roll that is essentially timeless!

(17) Superstitions "Hell on My Heels": Last year, I discovered a new world of young teen and early-twenty-something budget-rock appreciators that were--if barely on the edge--part of what we non-Southern-Californians have come to know as "the Smell scene." These guys are still into releasing a bevy of limited CDR and cassette releases, spackled in paint and glitter just like their DIY dayglo noiserock Smell friends, but they worship the Mummies and Trashmen like no one else born between 1975 and 1985, excepting the teenage Donnas. Erupting from the O.C.'s arm of this microscene came Party Fowl, whose ignited surf-trash-thrash showed incredible promise early. Now, Party Fowl's fully awesome, and the first band I'd recommend for a budget-rocker label honcho. Blew me away at the live show! Yet, I was not ready to be bowled over by the so much more mature sound of Seth from Party Fowl's one-man-band project, Superstitions. On his debut cassette, No One Gets Out Alive, I hear the traditional one-man-band set-up played well, like King Louie, but hybridized with another of Seth's fascinations, the Country Teasers. I hear it in the deliberate rhythms, his voice, and maybe even the lyrics...what I can make out anyway. Between this and Junkpile Jimmy, Orange County must be at the forefront of awesome one-man-bands.

(18) God's Gift "No God": From the Buzzcocks' New Hormones label comes something altogether unlike the Buzzcocks in every way except that certain unmistakable Englishness. Around 1979-80, God's Gift made this 12" and a 7" on the label before, I presume, fading into oblivion. Ungooglable, their story remains a mystery to me, but their completely dessicated plodding twangy postpunk is quite the rewarding test of patience, and again, not unlike the Country Teasers.

(19) Dogbite 65 "We're Going to Tassle City": This Portland band was (still is?) a side project of Buck Rothy and Zack from Danava, and formerly Princess Sweepstakes, who became Danava after Zac Nelson moved down here to Sacramento and later started Who's Your Favorite Son, God?, and that's some crucial recent KDVS history that we'll be bragging about for the next decade or two. Buck and Zack made this three-song CDR-EP called "Motorbike Poop" with help from Zac Nelson on raucous, ridiculous background vocals. Musically, this reminds me of something you'd hear on the Nuf Sed or Brinkman labels about 15 years ago...psychedelic weirdpunk taking some cues from Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 and maybe a couple from Caroliner, too. Ramp the progfactor to a stylish medium/high level for that final fugue. Shoulda been a vinyl-bound keeper!

(20) Slicing Grandpa "Fence": Seattle’s supreme slingers of evil lofi dungeon drone drive a hooky bassline. Now, don’t think boring ‘cos I said drone. Writhing, scrawly, and creepy, their scuzzy noise reveals a great sense of humor. Not everyone will appreciate the joke, because of course it’s very twisted and misanthropic. But if you have the heart for black comedy, and especially if you reach again and again for Shadow Ring records when you wanna let the laffs rip, then you oughta get to know Slicing Grandpa…and while you’re getting familiar, also check out the related Kount Fistula, another branch of the Tractor Sex Fatality family tree of bands.

(21) Deathgleaner "Life With Lice": Tons of teens these days dress up in the tight girljeans, eyeliner, and assymetrically screenprinted undersized shirts, and this is the uniform to enjoy some overproduced screamo-goth-metalcore amalgam with a five-word band name that glorifies pain and agony. But not Griffin. This teenaged noise phenom originally from Kansas City but now skating between Portland and Olympia has an incredibly mature handle on just what agony should sound like. I'd say that this particular track (taken from the "PDX Artix 2006 Mix-Tape") compares well with some of the best material by Prurient. The ominous prelude reveals patience far beyond his ADD-riddled generation's normal capacity, and the convulsive derangement of the possessed itch-fest crescendo is just plain scary. You will be scratching at little burrowing phantoms in your beard, yet Griffin's probably too young to grow one! The idea that he may improve with age is perhaps the only thing scarier than this song.

(22) German Shepherds "Booty Jones": If M.A.L.'s incest song wasn't enough to turn your stomach, you might still wanna brace yourself for this song, which I can only assume is an autobiographical song about pedophilia. The voice you hear is that of a man who killed himself awaiting trial for child molestation charges. The prosecution would have been really smart to introduce this song as evidence. The defense could've also used the disorienting synth sounds and gloomy bassline and trembling voice--a'la early Cabaret Voltaire--to build a case for insanity. Truly courageous stuff, even if it's totally repulsive.

(23) N.213 "Revenger": Nic Hughes is best known to most of you as the singer/guitarist of Shearing Pinx and the drummer of Channels 3 & 4, who have been two of the most exciting Vancouver bands of recent years, but he's still got enough time and spark between all that to be in no less than two other bands of high quality, AND also have his solo project, N.213, which is unmistakably Nic for the most aggressive sounding delayed vocals you might ever hear. You hear it in Shearing Pinx, and you hear it on this solo track which was taken from his "SX-79" CDR album on his own ultra-prolific vanity label, Isolated Now Waves. There's a lot of variety among the several N.213 releases, but "SX-79" was very much a dark electro or dark-wave sorta thing, essentially very authentic but with an icy no-wave edge.

(24) Men/Eject "Draw": I've gotten two different stories about who this band was, but they remain a mystery. The sleeve of this 7" from 1980 had no band or label information, but the grooves contain some of the most compelling dystopian bleakness and alien-weird almost formless synthpunk I've ever heard.

You Can Still Get "Newbie Friendly"

"Newbie Friendly" took about nine hours to build, and I'd sure love to give them away to music freaks out there. So, if you are a regular listener of "Art for Spastics" on the archive, then I don't blame you for going to bed early tonight. You were planning to catch the archive, right? Okay, well...the "Newbie Friendly" compilation CDR of 24 ultra-rare and outstanding tracks is still available, but you must ask for it by name. The KDVS Fundraiser ends on Sunday night at midnight, but I can only guarantee that the comp will be available by itself as a special add-on bonus premium gift for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Otherwise, you can also donate $100 to KDVS and pick up handmade CDR compilation prizes from all 13 KDVS DJ's who have made their own for the 2007 Fundraiser. That includes Todd Urick of the "Hometown Atrocities" show, Tim Matranga of "Kicksville 29 B.C.," and Megan of "Beyond Chicks & Cars." Those three are always raved about by so many record geeks. My girlfriend Fuzzbox Flynn has a special comp this year, too, which has some really rare Cassette Underground ephemera which has been preserved in all its glory by Robert Bolman. Who the hell is that? Trust me, if you are a fan of Subterranean Records stuff from the early 80's, you will be pleased to find out the answer.

I am inspired by so many DIY bands and artists of rock 'n' roll and noise and all shades in between to do this radio show, go extreme-blogging about them, set up shows in Sacto and Davis, and travel to an average of two live shows per week. It's really all about the bands and the people who like to find out about new bands and hear long lost or never-knew-about bands. And, yes, even the sometimes pathetic people who are just singularly obsessed with records as collectibles. You all inspire me through your courage to deliver the goods, raw and real and as awesome as you can make it. That's why, 13 years since starting here at KDVS, I have resisted burnout, and that's why I work to make all those HTML links so that people will know that even though some of these records and CDs and tapes are limited to 20 spray-painted and glitter-spackled copies, this music is available someway, somehow. And there's over 100 other DJs at KDVS--nearly all experts in some field or another--who are similarly afflicted with this disease, and volunteer their time to spread rarely heard music on the airwaves and over the internet. The time and effort and loving care is worth a lot, we think. So, please donate to keep KDVS alive and well.

Thanks!

Art for Spastics v. 129 feat. the Flower Vato

.
The Flower Vato filled in for me while I was in Oakland at the Lightning Bolt show. Thanks, Larry! He's an outstanding freeform DJ, and if you listen, I'm sure you'll agree, and you'll hardly miss me! I'll be back next Monday night, and you should be ready because the KDVS Fundraiser will be happening. It's an important time for us because most of the money we require for maintaining and improving our service to you is from listener support, and we only ask for it one week per year. As a special thank-you gift for donors of $25 or more on my program, I'll be giving you a CDR packed with some great new music by the likes of Factums, Skarekrau Radio, Wax Museums, Deathgleaner, and many more, and even exclusive songs by AIDS Wolf, KK Rampage, and Der Submarine Racers...plus, I'll be interspersing it with some blasts from the past that fall under the guise of "What if they KBD'd the 90's?" This CDR is in addition to any other regular "premium" gift that you choose. Watch for a reminder about this. Thanks!

Extra No Onions is a CDR of four junkfood-obsessed songs by Plain, which as far as I understand it, is one prolific man from Seattle named John Laux who is better known for his work in bands such as Tractor Sex Fatality, Slicing Grandpa, and Kount Fistula. Unlike so many other junkfood-junkie bands like the Go Nuts, Sewer Trout, and Public Humiliation, Plain does not pile up punchlines in compounding comical couplets. Plain's brand of boffo is the insidious time-release method of driving the low-brow so far and so low that it comes out at the other end of the low- to high-brow spectrum. If you're smart and at least somewhat sick in the head, you will understand that this is hilarious. Kinda like a quasi-metal Cheer Accident, but even more patiently paced and more deadpan. No address or even a MySpace presence, so good luck hearing more Plain on your own!

Pisspounder gets me thinking about bro-dawg brew-chuggers slammin' the lowest-quality swill, but it's actually a new triple-LP compilation just out on Deathbomb Arc which contains one side each by six bands within a triple gatefold hand-screened and haphazardly painted covers that smell like the acrid froth of decomposition. Come to think of it, it fits all too well with the music. These six intrepid bands blow up genres with aplomb here, and I've probably only given you two of the most accessible moments of the entire collection. "Prime Time" opens up the sprawling Aa (Big A little a) side with oozing synth magma that soon yields to a driving, dynamic onslaught of tribal percussion and insistent exhortations. This might be the best and most inspiring should-be pump-up jock-jam since the Hospitals made "Rich People," and both songs sound like they were recorded in an airline hangar, but make extremely advantageous use of the live room sound. The magma creeps back in for the subtle outro, but the side plays on to become less predictable and more psychedelic. It's music like this that makes me not complacent to enjoy the Liars very much. From the Foot Village side, we basically get an aggressively overhauled Captain Ahab remix of the "Brazil" report from the World Fantasy 10". The exuberant shrieks and screams of the Villagers can barely be heard below the din of what must be dozens of cracked keyboards and stuttering sequencers. Other bands on Pisspounder include Sword Heaven, Rainbow Blanket, Grey Skull, and Dreamhouse, and they all tend to move further toward noise. Great comp that I highly recommend!

Art for Spastics v. 125

.
UPDATE (03/15/07)!
Sorry about the confusion, dudes....Thanks to the time change coming early this year, the archive is catching shows an hour early, so the link above only contains the second hour of AFS v. 125.

If you want the first hour of AFS v. 125, CLICK THIS LINK HERE.

That's a two-hour mp3 file, too, but the first hour is the last half of Calamity Janie's program (which rocks, so you might as well enjoy it, too), and the second hour is the first half of AFS v. 125.

Our archive adminstrator has addressed the problem now, so next week will be okay.

The second half of the show begins at this link...
