AFS v .194 ~ Weirdpunk Smorgi

Siltbreeze Records has released its 2nd 7" EP within a month, and its 2nd 7" in about 12 years. (Was the last one really Bardo Pond's Test for New Swords?) New this week is the latest by AFS faves Little Claw. Continuing to mine less percussive, subtler territory as heard on the Why?/Why Not? 7" from earlier this year on Physical Sewer, Kilynn and co. tone down two of the scorchin'est seethers from their raucous live sets of recent years, and the result are two pretty ditties. The perfect song for the final heat of an election season, "Race to the Bottom" still has a powerful and direct guitar groove and aggressive vocals, but there's no more cavestompin' drum pummelin'. It reminds me more of a street protest song. The flip is offered here, and it's a beauty with the allure of lilting vocals and ether-surfing guitar feedback waves. Don't sit around waiting to order this.

Mattress live session on KDVS

Mattress kicked off his Heavy Duty Cali tour tonight live in Studio A at Freeform KDVS 90.3 FM in Davis.

Full setlist and photos will be up shortly, so check back. 'Til then, go ahead and download...

Many songs from his new Heavy Duty LP/CD on Reluctant Recordings were performed, but made new again by some little live tweaks made by his guest musical partner, Phillip, who is in the band known as Syrup in Portland, and also the one-man-band known as Xocotl. A tasteful little garnish of contact mics, effects, a rack tom on the floor, some weird little syno-drumpad, an oscillator, mouthsounds...nice touches that add texture without stealing Rex Mattress' spotlight.

What you don't get is seeing Rex charismatically work the crowd....You gotta go see that! So, peep the tour schedule in the next blogpost!!

AFS v. 193 ~ You Gotta Church! (Mattress hits the road!)

My girlfriend put out his first record last year to rave reviews. I've seen him nail it in live performance at the Cypress House and Delta of Venus in Davis. Now, with an awesome new album in tow, Mattress is coming to California for the first time in a long while. Mattress is one man, Rex from Portland, who grew up in the casino/lounge capital of Las Vegas, and his style of crooning does indeed reflect that. If you were to plot his style of voice and charismatic showmanship on a graph, it would be equidistant from three points being Nick Cave, Alan Vega of Suicide, and Dean Martin. His musical accompaniment is rather like minimal wave gone tussin-drunk. This guy's songs are captivating, he's really unafraid to sing, and he puts on a great show!

Another favorite of mine is touring up and down the West Coast right now!!!

On two previous CDs, Portland's Silentist has been the solo project of Mark Evan Burden, who's probably best known for his stint in Get Hustle. For the third Silentist CD, the band has expanded to a duo. Now the band's dropping their first vinyl LP, and it is TREMENDOUS!!!

From the giddy-up, Silentist has made drastic brutal prog of epic proportions...occasionally with some soaring, scintillating psych beauty, but more often with the kinda strident severity that fans of Billy Bao and Brainbombs perversely enjoy, but with deep touches of blackened doom and compositional focus, this is in its own musical territory.

Mark's piano work on the two latest releases reveal his fascination with the pummeling minimal cascades of player piano scrollwright Conlon Nancarrow.

Have a look...

(I mean...this video gives you the basic idea, but on this tour, the three-piece version of the band is fuller-sounding and much more slaying (and thankfully strobe-free))

Now, go see 'em...(TRUST ME ON THIS, ALRIGHT??!?!)

Time Is Not On Your Side / Bad Car Karma

Sorry, folks!

There was no "Art for Spastics" radio this week because my Volkswagen picked Monday night to become a mechanical menace, overheating in the midst of a dire traffic jam.

But in case you missed either of the last couple shows, be warned...

AFS v. 189 featuring live sets and guest-DJing by NoBunny & the Wax Museums must be downloaded here...

(expires in five days!)

AFS v. 190 featuring a live set and guest DJing by Dead Western must be downloaded here...

(expires in 12 days!)

By next week, I will have saved up so much new vinyl and advance-CDRs to play, it's gonna be a true extravaganza (as opposed to the typical cavalcade).
