For most of the last 17½ years, I've hosted a regular weekly program at Freeform KDVS 90.3 FM in Davis, and it's been a great time!
I never did tire of finding and playing all kindsa new and underheard music for you to hear, nor did I get tired of meticulously planning musical segueways or diagramming excursions through styles and genres of music. Having discovered KDVS at an early age, it was very natural of me to enjoy a wide variety of music, and I hope that openness rubbed off on some people.
Even as Australia continues to rise, I do feel like the punk/noise/DIY/underground might've peaked a few years ago, but I still do find plenty to enjoy every week among the records, tapes, demos, and streams that continue to cram the mailbox at KDVS and my P.O. box through perhaps too many purchases. 'Til I'm down to my last dollar, that's when I'll buy my last record.
I won't say "I quit" KDVS or this blog because I know I'll be subbing for DJs who are out sick or outta town or pulling all-nighters for study or term papers, but I can't forecast the frequency of these radio appearances. I do promise that I'll continue to post 'em up right here so you can have a listen. I might also be using this blog for more writing. I used to do a lot more of that before my weekly schedule began to get too crowded.
There are several reasons why I'm stepping back now--let's call it an indefinite hiatus--and chief among them are that I'm trying to explore more interests for which I've not made enough time over the last few years. I used to hike to the top of a mountain every week or two, but I haven't done that in a few years now. I used to travel a lot more, and I always wished that I could chronicle those travels better than just writing Yelp reviews of the places where we ate. I just happened to find a perfectly functional Polaroid SX-70 at an estate sale, so now I'm excited to get started on doing that. ALSO...I'd like to have a band that lasts longer than 1-2 shows or 7-8 practices...maybe record something! Make a record? Perhaps start a label? Not sure about that last part, but we'll see where this life-after-KDVS goes. There's also the friends and family who I didn't get to see often enough because I spent two nights per week at KDVS (one to do the show, another to train the next generation of new DJs). I definitely wanna spend more time with them, too.
KDVS will continue to be among the handful of very best radio stations in the world, so I hope you will continue to listen and support this station which I think does the best job of playing the newest of the new music that few if any others find. We've instilled in many new DJs the desire and the courage to knock over unturned stones to see what's there, and share it with you the listener, even if there's still lotsa mud on it. Bands, labels, etc., please keep sending your music there. If it deserves to be heard, I'm sure it will!
Check back here maybe every couple of weeks. See ya around! Thanks for listening!
